Do youths substitute alcohol and marijuana?: Some econometric evidence

ABSTRACT

This paper adds to the limited economic literature addressing the question of substitution between marijuana and alcohol. Youth drinking and heavy drinking, taken from the 1982 and 1989 MTF (Monitoring the Future) surveys, are estimated as functions of the price of alcohol, legal drinking ages, and the price of marijuana. In addition, the probability of a non-fatal youth traffic accident, an outcome related to both alcohol and drug abuse, is estimated. Finally, state level youth motor vehicle accident rates are examined using data from the Fatal Accident Reporting System (FARS).
